Your Small Business Logo: Picture Worth a Thousand Words

Designing Your Business Communication

Your small business identity (brand) consists of much more than just the name of your business. Everything from your business cards, letterhead, the colors you choose, the font, and your tag line should all convey a message to prospective customers or clients. From the get-go, you must consider what that “message” is. You should then use those elements of your corporate identity consistently throughout all your marketing and communication materials.

The business logo you create should be appealing, vibrant, simple and recognizable. Think about some of the most well-known logos in the world and you’ll see that they have these qualities in common. The Nike swoosh, the Izod alligator, the MAC Apple, McDonald’s golden arches, the Mercedes logo, the BMW logo, the Starbucks mermaid, and the Playboy bunny are all easily recognized around the globe.

Visual business logos make your company more memorable because people learn things and remember things in many different ways. When prospective customers see your logo as well as see or hear your company’s name, they’re using more of their brains to process the information — both verbal and visual. More of a mental impact is made when people associate your business with words and images.

Need business logo ideas? Let’s consider some other factors that will help you create an effective business logo.

An effective business logo conveys something positive about your company. The Target logo, for instance, is simple and elegant. It tells customers that Target stores are where they’ll find exactly what they want at exactly the right price. The bullseye logo also suggests competitiveness, accuracy, and efficiency — the very traits consumers are looking for in a business.

Here are some things to look for in a graphic designer if you’re not going to design your own business logo:

  • Experience
  • Cost
  • Work samples
  • Ability to meet your deadline
  • Creativity
